We all know that the sun rises during the day that the rain is wet and that food satisfies hunger. Many of us know that the capital of France is Paris and that there are five oceans. But we know much more. How much do we know? That is The Big Question a research project devised and coordinated by Jon Andoni Duñabeitia director of the Center for Cognitive Science C of the Nebrija University in which teams of researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid José Antonio Hinojosa participate. and the Rovira i Virgili University Pilar Ferré Marc Guasch and Roger Boada within the framework of the SAPIENTIA-CM research program HHUM- funded by the Community of Madrid.

What really is this concept that we all call “general culture”? The Big Question is a project aimed at investigating the knowledge shared by different communities thus determining the cultural links between people. What level of general culture do we have in the different territories of Spain? What does it depend on? The first objective of The Big Question is to determine the average level of general culture of the Spanish population and its different autonomous communities. But to this is added a second much more ambitious objective focused on finding the variables that determine whether citizens have a greater or lesser level of knowledge on issues that make up what we call general knowledge.



The Big Question project aims to answer these questions following a very careful experimental approach of general scope and from an interdisciplinary perspective that will allow us to understand and above all quantify the concept of general culture. For this purpose a platform has been designed that allows you to test the estimated level of general knowledge for free and in approximately five minutes based on more than questions from different fields of knowledge. In just a few minutes a person can test their knowledge and receive an estimated score of their level of general knowledge with respect to the entire participating population. In addition people can check the estimated level of knowledge for each autonomous community.
